Borders: A Transnational Photography Project

Welcome to the Borders Photography blog.

The project this site represents is an attempt to examine the impact of forced migration on ethnic minority children from Burma. Using an anthropological approach that depends heavily on the use of art and photography, the project will address questions of personal, communal, regional, and national identity.

  1. Session Four: “Sequence\Series” Assignment

For the fourth session of the photography workshops, we traveled to local markets where the students could take photos of a variety of different kinds of objects and items.

For this assignment specifically students were asked to focus on the concepts of sequences and series, as ways of arranging their photographs. Each student was asked to take six photos that would make up either a sequence or a series. This assignment allowed us to talk about narrative through multiple images.

We also discussed ordering and presentation, as each student was asked to diagram how they would organize their series of photos and what order they would appear in to best communicate their idea.

“This is a picture of many types of things that seem the same to me. These were in boxes at the market.”

  4. 3) Bananas
“I took pictures of different foods such as bananas. I like bananas, but only a little, not very much. These bananas, though, looks delicious. I took this photo at the market after my friend bought it there. It makes me hungry, but it is not ripe yet so I can’t eat it until it is yellow already.”
